Do you buy local or order from the states?

For instance.... A part is $350 american. ~$395 cnd, plus shipping, plus duty (maybe). $450-500

To buy same part is $450 at dealer plus tax.= $495 (10%)

You are probably a bit cheaper from states but....

Do you take cheap route? Or support local.

Also how much is mark up? Why is said part not $400-$420 cnd to be competitive with states?

Depends what it is. I find whenever I order parts from a dealer it either gets delivered and I'm not notified, or I'm incorrectly notified before it's actually delivered. If it's small I'll order online just for the convenience of getting it to my door instead of driving to town to the dealer but if it's big enough to not fit in a postal box I'll go through a dealer.

Depends on how soon I need it, how close the pricing is, and my relationship with that vendor. Good example I saw today is the hood vent for the XM, $100 plus tax in Canada or $50 in the states plus shipping, duties and tax.

i swear half the time it ends up being just about the same price, and a lot less hassle supporting local

The local skidoo dealer (Newway Motorsports) treats me very well. So I order all my parts from them. When I had a Arcticat however I ordered all my parts from the U.S.

Yeah for a single item it usually goes that way. To make ordering worth it usually need to do a batch. In your case you can run down and grab it from Ship Happens or somewhere similar.

If I'm buying OEM parts I'll buy from my local dealer because I find with shipping & customs brokerage fees it's no cheaper to order from the US. If I'm buying aftermarket then I'll go with wherever I can get the best deal whether it's Canadian based or not. If I happen to be in the US then it's a no brainer to buy down there if I know I need something.

I always buy my OEM parts from my dealer. I want them to stay in business and I support them always.

Other items, GoPro, clothing, accessories for the truck (other than Randall's amazing SuperThings), beacons (last two have been from Zac's), etc., I normally buy in the states and have it shipped to the border.

Certain things can save you a lot of cash depending on how it ships and some times i break even but i have it in my hand.
the best deals i have made were on motor rebuilds and clothing shipped usps of course with lower brokerage fees or none at all sometimes.

I find my self more and more buying online better price and better service! Or over the phone!
the dealerships seem to stock less and less their prices get worse and worse and the parts guys wow know nothing now days!
still some good ones out their but few and far between! I like to support local but don't like to get ripped off!

Yah im more talking aftermarket. Like im trying to price some options out... But its hard because my sleds a double duty sask and bc sled. Look at the products page and the price is ok. Then find a dealer in canada and its way more than the part price but in cnd funds.

Like they order a bunch of units, some times if they order early they get better deals on what they order depending on the size of the order. They probably (hopefully) have their own broker and use a single shipping service to save money getting the product. So its a fraction per unit for shipping than it would be for a normal person shipping one to canada. But then.... Its still as much or more than me ordering one part my self from the manufacturer.

I understand, your in the business to make money. But being more competitive with the us would probably bring in more sales....

It can really depend on the item. Stuff like my MX gear I can get for %70 less purchasing online from the U.S and many ship free to Canada now when over a certain amount. Other soft goods like sled gloves there isn't much savings.

Hard parts from aftermarket companies for bikes is cheaper online, for sleds it is usually cheap as long as it is in stock from a Canadian retailer.

OEM parts I stick with the dealers on just about all of it. By the time you pay shipping and possible brokerage it isn't worth it most of the time.

which sites offer free shipping to canada?

BTO raised their minimum purchase but still has frequent free international shipping on some items when on sale.

Motorsport is like $15 flat rate, bike bandit used to be free not sure now, there is another one that is free over $400 but like BTO has special offers from time to time. Can't think of which one it is right now. In the spring when I get tires and gear it's easy to get the free shipping.

In Canada I have had the best service from Canada Motorcycle. The carry sled gear as well.

Have not bought many sled aftermarket parts, but definitely I have purchased ATV parts from the states, usually from Super ATV. I wanted spacers, lift kit and heavier springs for my RZR. Parts local would have set me back about $800. Spacers were almost $200 a pair. I checked out Super ATV and then I bought what I wanted, paid for shipping, taxes, exchange and then a few more goodies. Did not break $550.
I went to the parts person where I got my first price to show the price difference of the spacers and springs, which I paid only $75 a pair for the spacers and only $99 bucks for the springs vs. $199. They told me to piss off. I truly felt I was being ripped off when I first went there to get some prices and I feel I was justified in buying cross border.

With the Can dollar trading at $.88 it makes it much harder to find good deals online, especially when you add in the cost of shipping.
