Was curious as I was helping out a customer find some pistons/rings for his yamaha snosport. We searched all over the internet and found a dealer with a on-line parts store. Clicked on the pistons, click on the rings, go the shopping cart, factor in shipping, and kaboom there's your total with method of payment. So being old school, I phone the dealer in the eastern states, to clarify that he actually has the parts in stock, answer was "no their obsolete", which I retort, well if i pushed the enter button on my on-line purchase what would happen. Answer was, well they would go into a back order mode. So my question is, how many people have actually kept track of there back ordered purchases and how long was it before you were credited back on your purchase? Cause I'm thinking they're working the numbers that a percentage will forget about there purchase. I know here when I make people pay up front for there non stocking parts, a small percentage will forget and i'm constantly reminding to pick up there parts. so any imput on a rainy day?

I had that happen with a video I tried to order from the states once. They let me know pretty quick it wasn't available any more, then kept trying to sell me videos I already had. My credit card was handled on the vendors site through Paypal and they charge your card as soon as you place the order, not to mention rip you off on the US/Canadian exchange rate. Eventually they agreed to credit my card back....of course at the current exchange rate. Cost me about 5 bucks for a video that was never available in the first place. These days if Paypal is handling my credit card transaction in someones on-line store I just shop elswhere or phone the vendor direct. :nono:

I buy enough (somtimes too much) from on-line suppliers. Be it ebay, or part companies and of the thousands of purchases I have made, I believe I have only had one instance that I was put on a backorder file and it was a mistake from the begginging.

I typically am used to shipping times and the shipper supplying transit or tracking numbers. When this item seemed to take longer than normal to receive confirmation of shipment I emailed the place in California and was called back almost immediatley with an appology.

I doubt highly that these companies are playing a numbers game. They are still buisnesses that provide services and products to the public. I do much prefer to use ebay when possible as I can see the Sellers rating, and anytime I see negative feedback I look to see what exactly the feedback was because almost always its not the sellers fault, but the buyer who didn't know what they were purchasing.

I wish there was a voluntary system available for all online retailers. If they wanted to participate they would have feedback given for their transactions.

Anytime I can buy local, I do. As was in your experience, you can't always get something local. As well sometimes there is just such a deal available online you can't turn it down.

When buying online, you need to educate yourself on the process. If I am dealing with a new company I haven't dealt with before, I search online for the product, once I find it, if they don't have an online inventory, I prefer to call and talk to someone directly before hitting the purchase button.

Many of these retailers do not stock all the products they advertise. They in turn request it from their supplier, some will ship direct to you, some will only ship to the retailer you purchased from, so your transit time has then increased.

Wow, this just got long winded.

For me, if I purchase something, its my money and I am going to want to know where it goes. If there is someone out there playing with the idea that the customer will forget about the purchase, I believe it would be a small percentage doing such.

You are aware that PayPal takes a cut of every transaction right? I think it's a couple percentage points.

Everyone takes their cut! Try to go to the bank when the dollar's at par and trade a Loonie for a greenback. You'll likely end up with a bunch of change!

I'm leary of most online stores. Unless someone posts their experience with a vendor or the vendor is a member of a forum I typically would not order anything. I've looked up lots of items where I get to the point of buying and then start to think what do I know about this company. I then look for contact info and where they are located. If I don't see an address or phone number I won't buy. If there's an email, I'll send them a question and wait to see if I get a response. I also hunt around the site looking for a date to show if the site was updated recently. Shipping methods and costs are the biggest reasons I research online stores. I hate the places that set their shipping rates based solely on the dollar value of the product and not the weight. A $200 widget that weighs 6 ounces will cost you $75 to ship.
If a vendor is a member of a forum then they have something of a reputation to maintain.
Learned a lesson back in the Krazy Eddy days. If it's an amazing deal they probably only have one in stock and it's already gone by the time you finished reading the ad.
