usually warantee is a go back accross to where you bought it type deal....... but import fee is 195.00 and you pay gst at border......have the paperwork sent there 72 hrs ahead of when you expect to cross......then do a quick out of province at crappy* tire* and* go register it..............just* my* 2 cents........if* your* looking* at* used* it* better* be a good deal...other wise* new prices in the states* are good right now....with this dollar........at least you know how it* was ridden* if it* does need something... and your* not* guessing........also* no sales tax in montana.......I have used sportcity cyclery in montana b 4 ....they were helpfull. and let us all know what you buy.

Also make sure the used sled has that special sticker on the right side of the tunnel and you are able to read it! Says it's Canada compliant and when it was built. If it's not on there and you get to the border they will force you to get a fax copy from the manufacture (don't ask me how I know...)

add in gas, RIV fee ($200) wear & tear on vehicle, time and it might not look like such a good deal... Just saying because I'm sure you could get a nice sled for about $8000 in Calgary area.:twocents:

I've imported 3 sleds & a trailer a few years back, but the margins for deals aren't as good anymore. I did it when people were just starting to discover importing, now it seems many people are doing it.

You just make sure you pick up something else to sell when you get here and pays for your trip, but I do still buy new sleds from local dealer so when I have a couple of older ones they don't mind working on them, stay in there good books. There was a 2010 154 summit with 2300miles for 5900.00 obo

I can't see that sled being more than 7500 in canada unless it has super low kms and a couple thou in aftermarket stuff that YOU want.

And if you do come across, don't try to low ball your your purchase price to try and save a couple of bucks in GST. Somehow they know...kinda spooky actually...If your straight up with them, it all goes fairly smooth. My .02

I'll list it in point form:

1) Get the seller to fax a legible copy of the title, or registration if the state it's coming from doesn't issue titles, to the US Customs POE (Point of Entry) that you will be crossing into Canada..before you go down to purchase. A follow up phone call is a good idea to make sure the POE received a legible copy. US Customs needs the title/reg in their possession for 72 hours min before you cross.
2) You need to register the sled in Canada with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles, so, there should be a USDOT/CVSS conformance decal on the tunnel. Make sure the sled has all the correct VIN/Serial numbers stamped on it as well.
3) Get a recall clearance letter for the sled from the manufacturer stating there are no outstanding recalls on the sled. You have to call them directly to get this.
4) When you do the deal, you can write a handwritten receipt, but, I'll warn you, if the buyer is trying to pay less tax, they may not accept the value on the receipt at the Canadian Customs.
5) You have to stop at US Customs on the way North and present the sled, the original title/registration AND the bill of sale. They will issue a clearance stamp.
6) Then on entering Canada, you will be asked for the title, bill of sale, recall clearance documentation AND possibly a copy of the classified or internet ad or a carbon copy of the certified cheque or withdrawal slip or other supporting documentation proving the sale price. Any applicable taxes are payable at this time. There is no duty on North American made machines. You have to pay $195+GST to the Registrar of Imported Vehicles.
7) RIV will email/mail an inspection form to you and now you have 45 days to get the machine to a designated inspection facility, any Canadian Tire.

I wouldn't try to get the seller to bring it across on the pretense of riding up here then just leave the sled with you. You will have no way of proving ownership if you are ever stopped and checked, just my 2 cents.

Hope this helps with your decision.

you might end up in a small room for 3 hours explaining to them why you lowballed and why they shouldn't confiscate your sled and your truck and why you shouldn't be arrested and why you shouldn't have a permanent record.

Then you get to explain to your teenage daughter why you were in that room for 3 hours while she sat in the truck.

Then you get to explain to your wife why you made your daughter sit in the truck for three hours and why there is going be a large entry in the bank statement next month to pay for a large fine.

This is all hyporthetical :(

How do you get a recall clearance letter without getting the dealership in trouble for selling to a Canadian. I'm talking new sled here.

You can't unless it gets registered into a us address first and then to you. They will not do it and will get into trouble, unless you have connections. good luck..

I think anyone can get a P.O. box in the states to get around the address thing but it must be a red flag to the manufacturers that a sled is going north when somebody asks for a recall letter. There must be a lot of extremely low mile "used" sleds crossing the border.;)
