I have a sportsman, ('06 700) and i have a question about the rear brake. The foot brake works when you pump it, but if you hold the pressure down on it, it goes spongy and slowly drops to the floor. I recently bled them (with the front end up in the air and the back end down on its axel) and they seem ok. I can use the hand brake and the caliper seems to work fine. I'm thinking that it could be the rear master cylinder. When i talked to the dealer about it he said that the cylinder rarely goes bad.

Any ideas???

Probably not a lot of choices your way, but you need a different dealer. Failure of the Polaris master cylinder on the foot brake is very common; in fact on the Gen 3 models, it's a guarantee the foot pedal will quite working.

Before you change the master cylinder, try flushing the brake fuild and re-fill with new fluid. You might get lucky.

This is exactly what I had to do with 2- 2009 sportsmans just last week. If they sit for a long period of time like over winter. They work good now.

it a pretty common problem that the foot brakes stop working on the sportsmans. most of the time it just need to be bled really good.

I did bleed them really good, the dealer here told me to lift up the front end and drop the back end and that worked pretty good. I just find it really weird that they are solid for about 15 seconds... and then they go soft and the peddle slowly sinks to the bottom. That is why i thought that maybe the cylinder is going bad. So would that be a pretty good indication that the cylinder seals are letting the fluid past..... am i right??

If thats the case then you should be getting fluid leaking out somewhere. If there is no fluid leaking then you pretty much have to be compressing air  When I bled my brakes on an 09 500. I found the reservoir to be really small and had to fill it like 3 or 4 times while bleeding, being careful not to suck any air into the lines, in order to purge it well. I know this might be a dumb question but are you filling the right reservoir, the one under the seat? There are two. Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

I'm not getting any fluid coming off of the cylinder. I flushed it 4 times, refilling the reservoir 4 times ( yes, the one under the seat!!:) ) I made sure it didn't suck any air... there was a steady stream coming out of the bleeder screw down by the caliper.

But correct me if i'm wrong.... does the cylinder have some sort of plunger on the inside? Would that not have seals on it that could be letting fluid past it on the inside? My reservoir does not go down during normal brake use so i don't think it is leaking out.

Were you getting clean fluid coming out of the bleed screw? If so, then you need a new master cylinder. If not, bleed it until the fluid coming out like what you are topping up with.
