Clocked out and off to clean and start putting her back together. Wish me luck! :D

At this stage, luck has very little to do with it. The sweetest sound in the world is turning the key (pulling the rope) on an engine you just poured your life into........BRRRRRRAAAAAAAP BRRRRRAAAAAAAAAP............

AND KNOWING YOU DID IT YOURSELF

Remember to post a pic of the grin on your face when it lights up for the first time:d

just a heads up rowdy, no synthetic oil at all for the 1st 1 to 2 tanks of gas. rings will never seat with synthetic oil. get a four litre bottle of good quality mineral oil. run it till about a litre left then you can run synthetic. also a litre in the fuel for the 1st tank. yes lots of oil. take it easy on the motor for 10 miles or so make sure everything is working, then rider like you stole it. you need to load the rings to get it to seal. :d

oh yeah, you could just lower your oil hose and all the oil will drain out, not cost a cent, can't believe these clowns want you do suck the oil out, where did they learn mechanics?

OK! So I made some headway tonight. Did as much as I could and feel comfortalbe with. Rave valves on, water pump on, oil pump on, head on, engine mount on, engine bay cleaned, oil sucked out and cleaned up a few other odds and ends. The stupid reed holes aren't threaded and I don't have self tapping screws so I'll have to wait to get those on. But pretty much ready to rock, just need a few minor things done with supervision, a torque wrench for a few things then light her up! Here's some pics of the progress. :D Stoked!

1.) Rave valves on!
2.) Oil pump on!
3.) Header
4.) Header, could only get it that clean... :(
5.) Header going on!

Really?! I really have to run mineral oil the first time?! Can anyone else confirm this?!

I wanted to add a bit of oil into the tank the first ride but a litre?! Seems like a lot. What do I know though! I figured first ride I'd take it easy until half way through the day sort of thing.

I've read alot of ownwers manuals and never ever ever have i heard that before.

engine break in takes an entire tank full of 100:1 plus the onboard oil system
engine throttle should never go over 50% for that entire tank,
once you start the engine for the first time, heat cycle engine. run it until the light comes on, shut it down and let it cool. this is the time to look for loose clamps and leaks, This is excatly what they do at PDI
As for ring seating.. rings never seat, they spin, so i call bullsh_t, a properly honed cylinder will hold enough oil in it to assist in patternering of the rings.
if there is a ring issue you will find out in like 12 seconds
I will take a quote from the owners manual of a sled i owned

"The engine (when new or rebuilt) requires a short break in period before the engine is subjected to heavy load conditions.
During break-in, a maximum of 1/2 throttle is recommended;however brief full throttle accelerations and variations in driving speed contribute to good engine break in."

But hey what do i know.. the whole ride it like its stolen method sounds legit

Your just having "way" too much fun there young lady.
May have to get you up again at MM5 and have you explain Motor Installs to the ladies who have never done them...lol...

haha I dunno about that. I'm no mechanic that is for sure. Having fun working on it though like you said! ;)

Thanks I appreciate it! That sounds more legit to me. Sorry imdoo'n! So full synthetic is fine, run until "hot" then shut off, first ride run it easy for the full day then I'll be good? Just want to confirm! :D

you can use synthetic oil in your oil tank and mix it with your gas 1 ltr is fine or a little less, biggest mistake people make when breakin in your motor is babing it.run it like you are going to ride it ,just dont hold it wide open.use the hole throttle 1/4 to 3/4 to 1/2 to taped for a second ,back to 1/2 to 3/4 again and again..do this for 10 mins then stop open your panels let it cool down(wait 10 mins) then do it all over again .i would do this for the 1st tank of gas and then it is on ...the heating up and cooling of the motor is gonna set your rings and your goood to go for 5000 kms....

I broke my old stock 670 Summit X in on the trailer by idling it to good and hot and then cooling it down until cold - three times. Sled ran like a charm and continued to bring home trophies at the drag races.
I've broken my other 3 motors in on the trail to Renshaw (McBride) burping them up and down all the way to the cabin....mostly below 1/2 throttle and near the cabin up to about 3/4. Once they cooled down it was off into the back country. No problems.

So I can't tell which way works best - Mfg suggested or Drive It Like You Will Later????
Both seem to work fine
