Anyone ever come up with a gear reduction system for a a recoil. I'm 300lbs 6'8" and it's all I can do to start my sled when its cold. Just an idea I had without the ability to make one.

Not that I know of. You need the recoil speed to start the motor, reduction might allow you to turn it over but even a small amount of reduction like 20% might not be enough to start the motor after that reduction, I don't know what the specs would be to have a gear reduction and still be able to start it. You would also have to install it and run it off the starter ring gear or somehow attach a "gear" for the gear reduction to the MAG side of the motor.

For my big sled when it is cold, I carry a small propane torch for the months of Dec to the end of Feb usually and preheat the motor externally if its below about -15C, then let it heat soak for about 10 mins, then it usually starts not too bad. If you are around home you could run an external block heater or in-line coolant heater to warm it up, they run on 120 V AC so need a wall plug in. If you are staying in hotels, and have a short drive to the trailhead, you could use a magnetic block heater. You just gotta make sure it isn't touching anything that can melt and remember that it won't stick to aluminum, but I have done this before as well, just rest it on the exhaust manifold up against the cylinders. You could plumb an in-line heater in and then plug into the hotel or generator possibly too.

I also carry lots of extra rope.....

I've sold in-line block heaters to s few guys for there b/b cats. They aork quite well when you are at a location you can plug them in.

When its super cold we always use a trouble light stuffed in under the y pipe faceing the block. You can use the 12 volt one it works to.
Just don't buy the LED one LOL.

On most of the recoils, there is room on the pulley for additional rope. Adding more rope would have the same effect as having a larger pulley that the recoil rope was wrapped around. It will be easier to pull however as was mentioned you will sacrifice rotation speed, but only slightly using this method. What'ya got to lose??

Up here in Dease Lake when we are out at the cabin overnight it might get down to -25 c the guys with the carborated sleds use the choke to kill or stop the motor at end of the day, in the morning they pull over way easyer 900cats 800 polaris and I think the extra fuel helps and they start first or second pull , EFI sucks in the morning its all I can do to get the M8 started
try the choke thing when you shutter down

What kind of big do you have? Is it like a 2000cc twin? If its anything less than a 1200 twin you better start eating your wheaties.

think at 300 and 6'8" wheaties ain't the issue, ride with a few guys with big bores and nobody fights with theirs anymore than the stockers, 2-3 pulls and we're off, it sounds like a bigger issue to me

we were in Mcbride the winter that the horses were rescued. -35C and I couldn't pull over my M1000. Howard damn near pulled his 900 cat out the back door of the trailer and it didn't roll over. when I did manage to get a half revolution she backfired and damn near pulled me through the dash. Face it, when it's cold a big bore is a bitch to roll over.

for the first start of the day.......wrap a rope around the primary clutch just like if your recoil broke.......then pull.....way easier! this is how they start those 2000cc plus engines when they are hot because the stock recoil wont even turn it over.........if it will start them, it will start a reg big bore with no problem.......just my 2 cents but I know nothing!
