Avalanche Activity Issued: Wed, Feb 20 Next Scheduled Update: Fri, Feb 22
There was plenty of avalanche activity on south-facing slopes, natural loose avalanches were mostly small on Tuesday, but explosive charges were able to trigger larger slab avalanches. The most active layer recently was a surface hoar layer down 30-40 cm. A significant near miss occurred on the 16th in the Crowsnest Pass area. This avalanche likely involved the deeper layer from October and occurred on a slope that had baked in the morning sun.
We saw a big huge snow cloud in the Butt Creek/Flathead area, which is an erie feeling. I had a small cornice crack and let go when I went over it that same day. Scary year this year.
