Heading out to golden from the 31st to the 4th. Just wondering if anybody knows what the av conditons are around golden? My wife heard about fernie and says she's not going if conditions are high. Any help would be great. Thanks

Check that often.

It's recommended you don't even go out. Slides are coming down naturally, they will definitely come down with human triggers.

it would be best to stay in the trees and meadows, most places have lots of terrain to ride, just stay off the big hills at this time with the weather being so cold and now a big hit of snow and warmer temps, stuff will be sliding I can tell you that.

be safe and be wise, I know anything can happen but you can minimze your exposure.
ride safe, its hard to stomach this outcome in Fernie so lets hope for the best to thoose people involved

The conditions right now are high(3) and considerable(2). There's snow in the forecast off and on through the weekend and they anticipate it to stay high depending on the snowfall, wind and temps over the next few days.
However, depending on where you want to ride, you'll be able to find safe places to go. The popular riding areas have open areas away from the big hills and lots of trees to play in. If you stay out of the Alpine and away from the hillclimbing, you'll be able to have a relatively safe, enjoyable ride. We're riding tomorrow and into the weekend, just planning our trip around the avy areas. There's so much area to enjoy, the hills can wait! Let your wife know that although it's a high avy warning, if you stay off/out of the dangerous areas you can minimalize the risk. Check the site that was posted earlier to you know what areas to watch out for and stay away from the big hills!
Where were you thinking of riding?

I was up to forester on the 29th... No slides but they need snow. Trail was fairly beat up too... How often is it groomed?

Haven't been to Forester this year yet, it's been in need of some snow. They groom the trail a bit irregularly up there, so you never know what you'll get. Snow this week will help it out.

We prefer to ride Silent Pass, Quartz, Gorman...especially this time of year. Just got back from Silent...INCREDIBLE snow!!! INCREDIBLY POOR visibility!!! Had an awesome ride - deep powder. Pretty windy and snowed all day- we stayed low in the trees and off the big hills. Still very dangerous avy conditions and this snow and wind won't help it. Trail is in bad need of a groom!!! But they should be grooming soon.
