I got to reading the downloading music thread and got to wondering what everyone uses for anti virus software? I used to use Norton but had my brother in law ask me one day why would I want to use a program that is a memory hog and everyone else uses. Makes it an easy target for hackers. He recommended Avast free and I have been on it for about 5 years now with no problems. Mind you I never had any problems with Norton but why pay for something when you can get something better for free.

Im subscribing to McAfee. My folks have had Avast and AGV (or AVG whichever one it was). Now My folks seem to alway be taking theirs to get viruses removed but I have had my computer for goin on 6 years now and the only thing I had go wrong with it was the hard drive crashed. I took it in and the service guy said it was just a bad drive from the factory, that it didnt look to him like there was any virus involved. Now I know my dad always tells me they are getting protected for free and its just as good as mine and I have to cough up the money for a 1 to 3 year subscription. My reply is oh well I havnt had ANY trouble with mine and have been downloading music and using it everyday compared to them. They dont download music, the only things they use it for is mom checks her email, facebook, and shops online and dad MIGHT check markets if they arent available on his DTN and he also visits AgTalk, and an occasional visit to poker stars. So I guess if I havnt had trouble why should I go look for some? Thats my :twocents:

Avast is the way to go imho. Avg is alright but it full of bloatware. Avast simple and effective. Avg want to install toolbars, make you do surveys, uninstalls are a pain in the ass and i dont need full screen popups every other time i start my computer. Avast(Free) for 7 years now and no probs.

I have had AVG for 3 years now and have not had any of the issues you mention. Never had to uninstall and have never seen a toolbar offer other than when first installing and all I did was uncheck the box and no toolbar and maybe I am just unlucky but I have never seen or been offered a survey to do:(. I also use spybot to clean my system up about once every couple months.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Google "MSE" and should be first page. It's free and works great and doesn't slow down the system at all

I switched over to Apple 3 years ago and was the best thing to do. No virus, no crashes, no executable files to deal with. More money to start with but well worth it IMO. My wife and kids have Microsoft computers and I am always clean, fixing dealing with an issue.
