Great thread - I used to be that guy that needed a beer everytime we stopped or somone got stuck. Over the years I have a new respect for the mountains, the terrain, mother nature, and my sled. I don't drink anymore or bring any with me. If someone brings a beer with them for lunch fine I won't say anything, but in all honesty all the guys I ride with are as serious as I am and usually leave the beer at the hotel. If somone is riding in my group and I see them packing their sled full of beer, I will say something. If I see someone having more then a beer or two in my group or not I will also say something and chances are I won't ride with you next time, and you will probibly feel like an idiot when we are done talking about it. I take sledding pretty seriously, like others have already said, anything at anytime could happen. I'm actually kind of blown away with how many people in this thread are admitting to bringing beer up with them. Drinking and sledding is a dangerous combo, I think most know this and the majority respect this and they will keep it to 1 or 2. Their will always be idiots that think that 5 or 6 will not impair them. One day they will learn...

Noboby in are ridinig group ever brings booze with them on the hill but usually bring enough along for everybody to have a couple in the trailer at the end of the day.

Well in all honesty... Do you think it's a bit secret?? I respect your opinions just like everyone else's but as I stated earlier, once the snow melts and what remains buried all winter becomes revealed to the public eye every year once the snow melts. I do not think that this thread and others like it has raised any more eye brows then what people have found once summer months take it's toll on the snow pack. There are hundreds of thousands of people that use these areas for recreational use during the winter, just like there are hundreds of thousands of people driving on our roads and cops still bust people over the legal limit. I know it, you know it, eeeeeeverybody knows that alcohol makes its way into the back country especially since there's barely any enforcement up there. With that being said again I don't condone the abuse of it by any means just stating facts. Since millsy's post, I am wondering how many beer it takes for one to be over the legal limit?? Does ones physical condition have any effect on it or is it the same for everyone? Honest question. Like he said, there has to be some leeway if there is a legal limit, insurance policies aside, which was another good point by t-team. But yes, I know I feel fine after 5-6 beers but I'm not dumb enough to think I'm indestructible, which is why I set a limit if I do chose to have any at all while sledding. Consuming 5-6 + up on the hill and you should give your head a shake.

So you won't drink a couple on the hill during the run of the day but you will have a couple each while loading up before you drive you truck and trailer down a populated highway passing other vehicles going the opposite direction with only a couple feet between you? Good thing you didn't have one or 2 while riding your sled in the wide open. Well thought out plan of attack I am def. the bad guy for carrying 2 with me in my pack

I can socialize just fine at the cabin drinking Gatorade. I've never had a beer on the hill, even when offered.

Maybe thats the difference, I don't take sledding as serious as you and your crew. It is a great relaxing recreational & social activity for me. I do not push the boundaries of myslef or my sled to the limit and tend to play around in low slope treed areas where I spend as much time digging as I do riding... If I was hard core pushing myself and my sled to the limits then I probably would not have any beer either. I don't take beer to the gym but I will have a few while running around playing frisbee....

I am able to sociallize with gatorade as well..... and I always pack one along with my couple beer. It's being discussed because someone had a question to ask. Or do you feel we'd be better off ignoring the elephant in the room..... maybe if we just pretend people do not drink on the hill that is a better stratagy then speaking publicly about it and promoting drinking responsibly and ensuring one is within the legal limit, 0.08..... last I checked we are not yet a zero toloerance society.

I dont NEED beer to enjoy snowmobiling, but it enhances my experience much like others would enjoy a cigar, there is a big difference between enjoying a beer or 2 and being impaired.... people at 0.04 BAC are not the ones killing people....

I find it inconsistent that a thread like this can stay open in the public eye and a thread where someone posts a video of riding on the shoulder gets yanked. I think this thread is 10X worst than the video RXN posted.....IMO

I'm assuming you're against it totally, which is fine by me, but I don't see the harm in this thread at all really. I initially started this thread to promote awareness of littering, drinking responsibly and do's and don'ts about it. Some may say that having a beer then operating a motorized vehicle isn't responsible... Well I say if you're under the .08 BAC then what's not responsible about that?? That's the law... And you obeyed it. No rules were broken, as long as the emptys were packed out of course!!! I think a thread has a very good direction so far. Some peeps have posted some very good thoughts. I don't think anyone, other then lhf of course, has promoted the idea of partying like a rockstar on the hill, a lot of guys have showed strong feelings about the matter in which they don't believe in, and others have said they do drink but at a minimum. If anything I think that this shows us sledders as a pretty responsible bunch! We just need better housekeeping efforts in some areas I guess.

On a side note... Has anyone ever seen recyclable containers at the bottom of trails?? I think if one were to set up a deposit box for emptys at the bottom of the trail head then there would be no excuse as to why or how big of an inconvenience it would be to take out your own cans. I've seen them set up in cabins but haven't really noticed much about the trails. Whatever money was raised could be donated to the local snowmobilers club. Just a thought ..?

I think this thread has had some excellent responses and been very civil. Solid dialogue and we may have even learnt a thing or two like the insurance issue.
I appreciate being able to talk about it and showing repsect to fellow riders. That is really what sledding is about.
Ride safe ride Sober....(or have one with your lunch)...but please don't make a mess of yourself and the beautifull backcountry.

Deffinetly the cat and poo guys. It's depressin riding one of them boat anchors. Drives a guy to drink. Not to mention what else is a guy to do while he's sitting in the cabin waiting for a tow.

I don't take beer up the hill simply because I have not yet figured out a way to get it up there without it leaking in my pack or tunnel bag or exploding on me when I crack one open on the hill (maybe that could be the subject of another thread but probably not a good idea if we are trying to look responsible "How do I get a dozen beer up the hill without any leakage or foaming"). I do not see a problem with having the odd beer on the hill provided you stay below the legal limit for impairment for the respective province you are riding in but certainly others have brought up an interesting point. If you have one beer and although not legally impaired you smoke someone on the hill and are hit with a million dollar law suit due to bodily injury will your insurance company back away if someone says I saw him drinking beer with his buddies not long before the crash? In exercising due diligence I believe one of the exercises an insurance company goes through when a large claim is advanced is to find a reason to deny the claim and consumption of alcohol would, impaired or not, certainly be the loophole they might be looking for.

the world is ending on thursday dec 21, lawsuits are irrelavent, may as well enjoy a beer at the pit stop. it'll b over soon anyhow.

What i would like to see happen with this thread is hand the key board over to your spouse or kids.... they can tell us if your drinking is fine or not. Might hurt a few feelings though...of coarse not nearly as much as the reverse of it.

I think that video was User removed not Mod removed. I think there has been some really good comments in here, and as long as it doesnt go sideways all is fine.

I think leaving your garbage/cans in a container at the cabin is almost as bad as dropping them in the snow. Someone still has to pack that down the trail. If it fit in your seat/pack/bag on the way up it will fit on the way down.

I usually take 2-3 beers with me and it's not unusual to have one leftover at the end of the day. We did an early season road ride this season and I took a 6 pack and I felt that was a bit excessive as it was a shorter day with lots of bevy stops. I always pack out what I pack in except once the lid came off my trunk and I lost it as well as a couple cans. tried to retrace my tracks but no luck.
