I'm waiting on parts for my 23 blown injector and ecm that went, so in the meantime im riding my buddies 20.5 turbo. It over revs, backfires and then bogs alot, especially on tech side hills, so that just messes everything up. Does anyone have time into this first release turbo to get it dialed? I'm guessing clutching, gearing and maybe a tune?

Depending on how much you want to invest in it. I’d start with clutching. Change ramps for sure those early ones were not the best. If you throw a tune into it, game changer and will need new clutch springs. Gearing should be fine.

Cheap solution go with the gen 5 clutching and should help if the tune isn’t in your budget

Yes… a lot. There nothing wrong with the stock ramps. Cheat codes are as follows:

Clicker 1
Dalton pink secondary
19T top gear
40XT secondary helix
1.5gr(175) 2.0gr(165) rings added to pin bolts

Should he 7900/8000 all day, track speed will be steady 90’s.

Have fun!

Ok sounds good, where do I go in Cowtown to get a tune, or to deal with clutch setup items?

Sound like something is wrong other than clutching if it's a stock setup on clicker 1.
What elevation are you riding the sled?

I thought the same, I am wondering about the reeds. Powder bogs sidehilling on the muffler side were common on my G4 with snow on the intake.

If you're over revving, which was not uncommon on some early turbos, the easiest, but not necessarily best solution is to add pivot weight. Some have had good results with basic aftermarket solutions such as Turbo Tamers.
Backfiring is a symptom of overrevving, and is known to damage reeds.
Bogging is not typical of these sleds, but may be a symptom of damaged reeds. I would say it is unrelated to clutching unless the clutches are sticking, excessively worn, or have broken parts.
Adding a tune without resolving the underlying issues would just complicate the matter imo. Even if the sled was otherwise running well, adding power via a tune would likely require a bunch of clutch work to match the change.

Edit: Not to dispute @Caper11 statement above that powder bogging is still possible, I was more referencing that it isn't a typical characteristic of the factory tune or etec's in general under normal operation.
In light of him mentioning his experience, there's a couple things you could check. There is a spring loaded valve on the underside of the upper airbox that is meant to help with clogged intakes. It has a mesh filter that gets very dirty with belt dust and fibreglass from the pipe. Secondly, some aftermarket exhausts have outlets that protrude excessively beyond the belly pan. We have found this to be significant contributor to exhaust bogs. If this is the case, trimming it back will help.

Ok it definitely needs weight in the clutches to stop over reving and you guys are probably right, reeds are blown, as a guess. On the way up the logging road trail, sled runs perfect,, 100% So maybe i will just start with weights in the clutch. I havent fixed reeds in a sled in many years, brains a little foggy in that department lol

I keep cleaning off the intakes, so the problem isnt related to plugged intakes

My buddy has been building tunes for linderman in the pass. Output is 205hp on the dyno, steady state. It’s about $6-700.
That sounds awesome, If i could get this machine to run right and then put that tune in,, then take him out and high mark him on his old machine lol

Can't see how it works fine on the trail but over revs at elevation. Should be the opposite.

I should clarify my G4 turbo a bit better, what I was referring to as a powder bog if I was sidehilling and stopped on the muffler side and gave it full throttle from a start, It would sometimes bog and get me stuck, cleaning off the intakes helped in that situation before I started to move again. I am also talking about super deep snow where the top of the hood was full of snow. As far as every day lower snow conditions, the sled ran like a trooper.

Has some similar issues a couple times with 2 different sleds. Both time it was the shot. Try unplugging it and see if you still have symptoms. its free to try.
