My father brought his unit down this weekend, new polaris xp 850 rode it out west this past weekend.

Rides nice power is good, lots of clearance. but what a hog on the fuel, had to dump in fuel after 60km's IS THIS NORMAL i assume it will get a little better once broken in.

Any comments about the milege, or general tid-bits about these machines.

***bye the way the brute smoked his ass for the first 60 ft, then see ya later:beer:

Thanks

Popo says 21mpg.... it has a 5.2 us Gal. tank. Based on running stock tires that equals 109miles to the tank... ( in a perfect world ) You should see atleast 80miles to that tank...

A friend of ours has one, and the stock tires suck big time. He even tipped it on it's side this past weekend because of the crappy tires , could not get up an embankment that everyone else made up. Other than that he loves the ride . My hubby took it for a spin(he has grizz 700) and he says the polaris power steering is better. Friend is getting better tires before the Robb Rally.

Just picked up my new xp850 and put on 100miles this past weekend. Still on the stock tires(meant for a golf cart) but found just the opposite with my fuel cosumption. 50miles on first ride and had 2 out of 5 bars showing on my fuel guage. At the 45 mile mark it was bouncing back and forth from two to three bars. This would indicate that i had approx. 1/3 tank left at 50 miles. This of course only holds true if the guage is accurate, i used approx 11 litres to fill it back up out of a 17 litre tank. I would expect 75 miles to a tank again depending on trail conditions. Besides that quad is vastly improved over the 800, just don't sneeze in front of it if you are running stock tires.

I notice you are from Canada, but all your figures are in MILES except the litres of fuel. Did you mean KM or MILES in your post???
I've had mine since late March, the first few tanks of fuel lasted about 70 KM to right empty. Now with just under 600 KM on the odometer it'll make just a shade more than 80 KM to a full tank. Mine has power steering which makes the tank smaller (17 L), non PS machines have 20 L tanks.
I have 26" Bighorn Maxxis tires (measure closer to 27"), and the storage boxes are packed full of gear etc.
It does seem to use a bit more fuel than any of my other quads have used, all the others would do about 100KM or more to a tank.

One bit of advice that i had heard is to use low range for almost everything except the non hilly hard pack, or excpect belt problems. Also make sure to let these 850's warm up before riding (even in warm weather) and idle for a miniute or so before shut down, otherwise the spark plugs will foul.

The old mans has power steer 2, with 27" xtr's, when we dumped fuel in, he still had his last bar blinking, after 5 lt, of fuel read almost 3/4 tank. All in all that day we rode 97kms and he made it back.

My light flashed the last hour back on the brute as well

Being that all the specs. are from the US my post was ment in miles... Are you happy with your XP? I have been thinking of upgrading from my 800. Besides the power steering and a bit more power with the 850 is it worth the extra $$$?

Miles is what i am refering to on my post. I never bother to change my setting to km's, have always left them as they come from polaris. Mine is the eps as well (17 litre) tank. I plan on running this tank to empty just to see how far i can go.
Putting on a set of 27" Zillas before the week end, but i don't expect that to change my mileage much if at all.
No problems yet but i am aware of the plug fouling and just picked up a spare belt in case.

So far i LOVE my 850 XP LE ,i don't have alot of experience with other Polaris models. But comparing to some of my other quads ('06 Honda Rincon 680, '07 Can-Am 800 XT, and '08 750 Kawi Brute efi.) the 850 seems to blend all the good points of the others into one nice package. SO FAR I ONLY HAVE ABOUT 600 KM on it, so realiabily is yet to be seen, but as of yet it has been better than all the others in terms of repairs. The ONLY thing i have needed was some heat tape on a plastic piece that is close to the exhaust. Based on this, yes i think it is worth the extra $$$$. Better seat, ground clearance, suspension, etc. etc.
