In auto engines pre ignition is caused from excessive detonation in which the uncontrollable flame front develops a hotspot on piston which in turn ignites the incoming charge before plug. Detonation can not be heard in auto engine however pre-ignition can usual be heard as a pinging sound.

Did your buddies sled work? I've heard mixed reviews on this. I think the biggest issue was running without airbox! I talked with Chris Bondi and he says airbox is a must. More consistent jetting and with all those pipes under hood temps are high.
