I know with my Yamaha grizzly’s in a 6.5 foot box it was tight. I just used those plastic car ramps you see at Canadian tire and that gained me the room to close the gate nicely. I think with anything that is shorter then a 6.5 bed you may need a riser.

The nice thing with those years of trucks is that parts are easy to find and they are straight forward to work on.

Could be your master cylinder, had a similar issue with a 15 grizzly I had. I replaced the master cylinder and re bleed and all was good.
