Could indeed be leakage. It is not normal.
I'd personally pressure test the engine. It's relatively easy and costs 20$ for a home made kit.
For a quick visual, do as RTK mentioned above. The 06's carb boots were a lot better then older models, but the Y-pipe bolts still back out. You will...
Is run-out the up and down movement of the crank? If so, why would the cylinder affect that? I know I need a stand and guage, but that's a tool I also don't have.
I guess we'll see when I split the case.
I agree with the comments stated.
1) Good on sledders for riding safe this weekend and hopefully for weeks to come.
2) The news doesn't glorify the accidents because they weren't motorized. Hell, one article I read it was hard to determine it was actually AT the Fernie Ski Resort. Talk...
Well I'm back at it again.
1-2 months of sitting in my garage in peices and this recent snow and a trip to the overpriced ski hills has me wishing my sled is up and running.
So, where I'm at right now:
- Engine cylinder is off and bottom end still in sled.
I have to take the primary off...
Nothing so far. It's sitting without it's cylinder on for the time being while I prep my bike for Baja.
I hope to get a better look at it in January sometime, then I can order parts and have them for when I get back early March. Maybe get a few rides in this year yet... :o
Thanks for the tip!
I'll have to pick up all the locktite and gasket sealer yet, but figure I'll get the motor out and dissasembled bofore doing some of that. I'll keep this in mind for sure.
Awesome!
Thanks.
Yea, I figure I'll take up either one of the above offers to do it right. My next worry is getting the bottom end out. My engine bay is looking pretty empty and normally I'm good at re-assembly, but after a few weeks it might be a bit vague and I'm worried about proper...
Thanks Nielsy!
I have to get the motor out first. It's just the bottom end in there now with pistons on the rods yet. I think I have to disconnect the pull start, oil injection, and bottom coolant hose and it "should" come out. I think there is a crank vent line too. I also need to take the...
I'll read the manual.
The thing I don't quite understand is there is a point when the computer knows the rotation of the crank and fires the spark, etc. Somewhere along the line the pick-up must match I would think. like you said, not sure if that's a bolt on thing, or a setting.
The tool...
People talk about keeping the crank in phase so the timing is right...
I'll be honest and say this is my first bottom end tear down so I'm not familiar with the process. Just starting to read into it.
What do you think?
Anybody have one they want to sell, or rent out?
I figure if I'm going to tear this damn engine down it's going right down to inspect the crank.
Hoping somebody has the BRP tool I can rent for awhile.
Thanks,
Q
Haha. Last year Ian and I ripped up the stream valley with deep snow! We both ended up getting stuck in a similar spot, but yea, it was hairy! There are some big holes to look out for too when there isn't enough snow to fill them in. It was a great ride.
Can't wait to get my sled together...
You Cat owners. Running around thinking everybody has fancy fuel and oil injection... yesh.
hahaha. Colin, my Rev is plain old carbed. No injection and no rails. Good old venturie tube of a carb and gas suction. That's all I got.
If you guys think it's detonation though I'll investigate...
Lemme know!
Nothing is happening fast these days. Busy with other things, but I would like to get it done sometime soon so I can start working on my bike.
Yea, thats my next step is to take the cylinder off and check the pistons. Has to come off to replace them anyways.
Not sure when I can get to that, but I'll let you know when I do. I'd like to do it sooner rather then later so I can order parts.
Not sure how these differ from motorcycles, but the Nicalsil (sp?) is generally informed not to hone, yet I see lots of sledders honing? I don't get it. Most builders say a typical hone won't even do much to the extremely hard Nicasil.
I'm first determining what is wrong. I dont' consider a...
Looks good! I don't have that kind of cash to throw at my sled, but I guess if I have to... Thing is I'd fix it and then sell it if I have to. haha.
Let us know how assembly goes. That thing should purr once up and running now!
Sure the plug looks a little white and head/piston a bit clean, but IMO, it doesn't look like bat detonation if it were.
What looks more like detonation is the "pitted" or area by the exhaust port. Those big "chunks" on the edge of the piston don't seem to go with that story.
Then again...
What's the opinions here?
I've never had damage like this before, but I'm leaning towards a ring.... Is it possible or common for a rod bearing to lose it's needles?
Thing is, whenever I seen damage like this on other's engines, usually the head takes a lot more abuse. Like peices of metal...
Clutch side Piston:
Questions:
1) What could have caused this. Seems awfully odd the major points of damage are across the cylinder from each other, yet the ports look ok. What did the engine swallow?
2) Is this the rattle I heard, or an existing problem and the rattle I heard...
