I have to change my assessment on the fuel mileage thing, today he ran it 370 kms from the start of the Dempster to Eagle Plains on a tank. Fully loaded, average speed around 75 km/hr. Impressive for sure, seems like it it hard on fuel on the highway but wicked when going somewhat slower.
Suspension is inadequate out of the box if you weigh more than 160 lbs. Fuel tank is on the small side (14L), not the best range for this kind of stuff. Other than that, they are typical Yamaha excellence in quality and reliability. It's a killer machine, great bike.
I'm headed to Tuktoyaktuk in the morning on the Africa Twin. Leaving at 6am, first night will be at the Liard hot springs. Then Whitehorse, then onto the Dempster. You can check out the MapShare page and follow along if so inclined...
I bought one for the wife to ride, a 900 Rally model. She loves it. Added a steering stabilizer to it, as well as some creature comfort stuff for her (windshield, comfort seat, reverse lever kit, top box). it'll do 100 mph (indicated) with my fat azz on it, and lay 25 feet of rubber off the line.
The wind shifted and fire is going north east, away from me but towards Peace River. Sounds like a few houses lost this evening. I can hear the screaming jimmys in the nodwells from my deck as of 5 minutes ago. It'll be an all nighter for a lot of those fellas.
Best was at the end when the 11 lost it all by himself trying to get by the 9. Guess he didn't beat everyone's favourite driver this week. Karma is a b!tch.
I dug both bikes out of the shed today, unhooked the battery tenders and took them for a lap around the yard. Now the forecast says rain tomorrow afternoon and snow in the evening. Le sigh.
I'm honestly surprised the Saskie boys have let this go on. Funny the gov't isn't suspending bank accounts of those donating money to keep this crap afloat.
