We split the cases tonight and found the problem. One of the thrust washers on the crank (MAG side) was missing and we round remnants in the crank, but mostly a lot of gold flakes. Based on the how the piston looked, most of it went out the top.
We are doing a teardown on a 2001 rmk 700 and will have the crank out in a few nights. I bought the polaris bearings for the outer races and I am planning on doing them myself. i usually subscribe to the fail while trying vs. the fail to try. I don't see many posts of guys attempting this. I...
Had same problem on 2001 rmk 700. 2500-3500 all the time. I found that the TPS was loose and I could move it with my hand. I dialed this in and it idled at 1500-2000 consistently, until we blew it up :p
Background: 2001 rmk 700 currently in tear-down due to piston failure on mag side. Cylinders are polaris 5131824 (original part number) and are in good shape considering. I've searched and searched and googled everywhere but cannot find anywhere where it says whether these are nikasil plated...
Thanks for the confirmation guys, we'll start pull it apart this week.
How about the oil consumption? 1/2 tank is about 20 litters, so running at a rate of 20:1. My dirt-bikes run 32:1, but I only know bikes, not sleds.
We bought a 2001 rmk 700 which is not much to look at, but seems to run fine. The sled is stock through and through but had some electrical issues (voltage regulator) and the speedo doesn't work (3300 showing). Other than idling a little high (2K), and drinking oil (1 quart @ half tank) it...
