Clayton: This doesn't need to go into the public but there is a big difference between an evening seminar and an AST1 course.
The seminar provides valuable information for about 2-3 hours about equipment, snow conditions, riding safely, search and rescue, etc.
The AST1 course provides 2 days of concentrated knowledge and field work. This is what one needs to travel safely in the mountains.
The first day (8 hours) is an extension of the short seminars. It is 8 hours long in the classroom talking about equipment, snow conditions, riding safely, search and rescue etc. Then the second day is 8-10 hours in the filed practising with your own beacon for single burials and multiple burials, probe and shovel techniques. Making snow pits to examine what's inside the snow (layer, crusts, hoar, etc.) is also a big part of Day 2.
The seminar is good but take the AST1 at the first available opportunity. Cheers, fs
